Red Light Therapy After a Facelift: When Can You Start?

If you've recently had a facelift, you may have heard about red light therapy being incorporated into post-surgical recovery.

But when can you actually start?

The answer depends on how you're healing, the type of surgery you've had and, most importantly, your surgeon's recommendations.

At Lymph Angel, post-surgical care is always approached gently and progressively. Red and near-infrared LED photobiomodulation may be incorporated as a supportive modality once healing is progressing normally and the client's surgeon is happy for treatment to begin.

What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, exposes the skin to specific wavelengths of low-level light.

Unlike treatments designed to deliberately heat or injure tissue, photobiomodulation uses light to influence cellular processes.

Red and near-infrared wavelengths are being investigated for their potential roles in supporting:

  • Normal tissue repair and wound healing
  • Cellular energy processes
  • Inflammatory responses
  • Post-treatment comfort
  • Skin recovery

Research into photobiomodulation following surgery is promising, although protocols vary considerably and evidence specifically following facelift surgery remains limited.

When Can You Have Red Light Therapy After a Facelift?

There isn't one universal timeframe.

The first days following a facelift are an important period of wound healing and monitoring. Your surgeon's instructions should always take priority.

Once incisions are closed, healing is uncomplicated and your surgeon has cleared you for complementary treatments, gentle LED therapy may be considered.

For example, at three weeks post-facelift, a client who is healing normally may be suitable for a conservative red and near-infrared LED treatment.

This doesn't mean immediately using the highest intensity or longest treatment time.

Post-surgical care should be progressive, not aggressive.

Why Red + Near-Infrared?

At Lymph Angel, the wavelengths of interest for this type of supportive treatment are:

630nm Red Light
Used in photobiomodulation applications involving the skin and superficial tissues.

850nm Near-Infrared Light
A longer wavelength capable of penetrating more deeply than visible red light and commonly investigated in photobiomodulation research.

Rather than automatically combining multiple colours or wavelengths, treatment should have a purpose.

Our Conservative Approach

When introducing LED during facelift recovery, treatment may begin conservatively — for example:

RED + IR | Low intensity | 5-minute introductory treatment

The LED panel is positioned without placing unnecessary pressure or compression over recently operated facial tissues.

The client's response is then assessed before treatment duration is gradually progressed.

Importantly, more isn't necessarily better.

Photobiomodulation has a dose-response relationship, which is one reason we don't automatically turn the intensity up or use the longest available treatment time.

Combining LED With Post-Surgery Lymphatic Drainage

Red and near-infrared LED can also complement carefully performed post-surgical lymphatic drainage.

After facelift surgery, lymphatic techniques should be exceptionally gentle. This isn't a deep facial massage.

The aim is to work respectfully with healing tissues while supporting normal lymphatic movement and recovery.

LED can then provide a non-invasive finishing step without requiring additional manipulation of the tissues.

When Treatment Should Be Postponed

LED or lymphatic treatment should not simply proceed because a certain number of weeks has passed.

Areas that are open, weeping, increasingly red or hot, unusually painful or showing signs of infection or compromised healing require medical assessment.

A sudden or concerning change in swelling should also be referred back to the treating surgeon.

The Lymph Angel Philosophy

Post-surgical recovery isn't about doing more.

It's about knowing what to do, when to do it — and when not to.

Every facelift and every recovery is individual. At Lymph Angel, post-operative treatments are adapted according to the client's stage of healing and always sit alongside, rather than replace, the advice of their surgeon.

Gentle. Considered. Progressive.
